Compare the options
The two roles are often confused, and plenty of businesses need both. This is the practical split.
| Consideration | Bookkeeper | Chartered Accountant |
|---|---|---|
| Day-to-day work | Records transactions, reconciles bank feeds, raises invoices and runs payroll. | Works from the finished records rather than entering them. |
| Compliance | Often prepares and files GST returns. | Prepares annual financial statements and income tax returns, and deals with Inland Revenue as your tax agent. |
| Qualification | No mandatory registration in New Zealand - anyone may use the title. | CA ANZ membership, a practising certificate, a code of ethics and ongoing practice review. |
| Advice | Focused on keeping records accurate and current. | Tax position, business structure, cashflow and the decisions behind the numbers. |
| Working together | Keeps the data clean through the year. | Relies on that data, and can help set the system up so it stays clean. |
